    The Reproductive Health Survey 2000 is the first survey in the history of the health sector of Lao PDR. This was conducted in combination with the
    Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS) related to mother and child health at end of the decade.

    Abstract

    The survey has been the responsibility of the National Institute of Public Health, Ministry of Health in co-operation with the National Statistical Center of State Planning Committee. The main objectives of the survey are to provide community-based information about the health status and the morbidity of the population in Lao PDR, and to provide reliable data for the next World Summit for Mothers and Children.

    The Household Questionnaire included the following modules:
    o Household information
    o sources of income , sources of food
    o sources of water
    o use of latrines
    o use of iodine salt
    o materials used for house constrution and access to the media

    The Women Questionnaire included the following modules:
    o Tetanus vaccination
    o Health care of the mother and child
    o Knowledge of women about STD including HIV/AIDS, and
    o Food habits

    The Children Questionnaire included the following modules:

    o Birth registration and early learninig
    o Vitamin A supplementation
    o Breast-feeding
    o Care of illness and
    o Immunisation of children aged 12-23 month

    The survey covered all de jure household members (usual residents), all women aged 15-49 years resident in the household, and all children aged 0-4 years (under age 5) resident in the household.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

    The Reproductive Health Survey 2000 was conducted by the LSB using two-stage stratified cluster sample method, covering 17 provinces and one special zone. The selection procedure resulted in a total of 21 061 households distributed in 720 villages, and covered 12 759 women 15-49 years old and a sub-sample of 3 060 men (husbands) aged 15-49 years old selected for interview.

    Questionnaires

    The Household Questionnaire included 9 modules.

    The Questionnaire for Individual Women was administered to all women aged 15-49 years living in the households.

    The Questionnaire for Children under five years old was administered to mothers or caretakers of children under 5 years of age1 living in the households. Normally, the questionnaire was administered to mothers of under-5 children; in cases when the mother was not listed in the household roster, a primary caretaker for the child was identified and interviewed.

    Methodology notes

    Procedures and standard programs developed under MICS and adapted to Lao NHS 2000 questionnaire were used throughout. Data were analysed by NIOPH and LSB teams within 2 months, using SPSS, version 10.

    Supervision was conducted by the National Institute of Public Health for 5 days with 55 participants, among them 5 were women.

    Data entry began in May 2000 and was finished in June 2000. Data were entered on 12 computers using Epi Info, version 6.04 . In order to ensure quality control internal consistency checks were performed.

Such inadvertent identification revealed in her/his analysis will be immediately brought to the attention of the data depositor.
    Access conditions

    The dataset has been anonymized and is available as a Public Use Dataset. It is accessible to all for statistical and research purposes only, under the following terms and conditions:

    1. The data and other materials will not be redistributed or sold to other individuals, institutions, or organizations without the written agreement of the Lao Statistics Bureau.
    2. The data will be used for statistical and scientific research purposes only. They will be used solely for reporting of aggregated information, and not for investigation of specific individuals or organizations.
    3. No attempt will be made to re-identify respondents, and no use will be made of the identity of any person or establishment discovered inadvertently. Any such discovery would immediately be reported to the Lao Statistics Bureau.
    4. No attempt will be made to produce links among datasets provided by the Lao Statistics Bureau, or among data from the Lao Statistics Bureau and other datasets that could identify individuals or organizations.
    5. Any books, articles, conference papers, theses, dissertations, reports, or other publications that employ data obtained from the Lao Statistics Bureau will cite the source of data in accordance with the Citation Requirement provided with each dataset.
    6. An electronic copy of all reports and publications based on the requested data will be sent to the Lao Statistics Bureau.
